APC Embarks on Major Energy Investment: 300MW Thermal Power and Coal Washing Plant to Boost National Development
In a bold step towards addressing Zambia’s energy deficit and driving economic growth, African Power Coal Limited (APC) has announced plans to establish a 300 megawatts (MW) thermal power plant and a state-of-the-art coal washing facility in Sinazongwe, Southern Province.
The announcement was made during the 2025 Labour Day Awards Ceremony, where APC Group Human Resource Manager, Mr. Brian Kapembwa, highlighted the company’s unwavering commitment to providing home-grown solutions to the country’s power challenges.
“We are proud to reaffirm our commitment to national development by setting up a 300MW thermal power plant,” said Mr. Kapembwa. “This project is more than energy; it’s about creating a workplace where employees feel valued, respected, and empowered. We are investing in people just as much as we are investing in infrastructure.”
The coal washing plant will enhance the quality of APC’s coal, boosting efficiency and adding significant value to the company’s product offering. Together, the thermal plant and washing facility are expected to create numerous employment opportunities, stimulate the local economy, and contribute significantly to Zambia’s energy sector.
Managing Director Mr. Jacky Huang, in a speech delivered on his behalf by Mr Durban Kambaki, emphasized the importance of investing in employee welfare alongside infrastructure development:
“Our employees are the backbone of APC. Whether their contributions are big or small, they are all invaluable. We are committed to creating a culture of trust, respect, and collaboration,” Mr. Huang stated.
Gracing the occasion, Southern Province Assistant Labour Commissioner Dr. Joseph Kaindama lauded APC’s investment as a timely initiative aligned with Zambia’s national agenda of inclusive economic growth.
“Workplace success thrives on mutual respect and good working conditions,” said Dr. Kaindama. “I urge all employees to remain committed to duty and avoid illegal work stoppages, which can hinder both company and national progress.”
The 2025 Labour Day theme, “Shaping Zambia’s Future of Work Through Home-Grown Solutions for Inclusive Economic Growth,” echoed APC’s strategic vision and proactive stance in contributing to Zambia’s development.
As APC breaks ground on these ambitious projects, the company remains steadfast in its dedication to empowering its workforce, adding value through innovation, and powering the nation towards a brighter, energy-secure future.
